Car info: We found our Chevelle
in July of 2005, at a Pawn Shop/Car Dealership outside Offutt AFB,
where I work. I was coming in late one day because I had an Eye Doctor
appointment and it was sitting in front of the Pawn Shop. It didn’t
have a sign in the window but I knew the owner had classic cars for
sale on occasion so I had to stop and ask. Sure enough it was for sale
so I talked to my wife, arranged financing and by the end of July it
was ours.
From the research I have done so far the car was originally a 327
Malibu, 4spd with a 12 bolt rear-end, and it was red with red interior.
The car had factory A/C, bucket seats with center console. In 1999,
according to the receipts I found in the extra parts box, the owner who
lived in Mississippi cloned it into a SS 396 and painted it blue with a
black interior. According to the Pawn Shop owner the 396(402) is of an
early 1970’s vintage, I haven’t pulled the casting numbers to verify,
it has stock Rectangular port heads and is pretty much a stock looking
motor for that era.
The body and paint are in good shape, paint has a couple of dings in it
from sitting in the previous owner’s garage. Interior needs some work,
the previous owner had striped the entire heater and A/C system from
the car so that all needs to be replaced. Also it needs numerous small
items to finish and refresh the interior. Today the car sits just as we
bought it 4½ years ago. We took it to the H&H All Chevy Show in
2006 and have showed it once at the local car show in Glenwood, IA. We
took 2nd place in our category the day we were there. Now that we are
close to paying it off the plan is to start working on some finishing
touches. By the time it appears at the 2010 World of Wheels plans are
to have several of the small interior items installed along with
Vintage Air Heater and A/C components in the interior. Future plans
include new wiring harness throughout, disc brake conversion kit,
upgraded suspension components, and replacing the stock looking
396(402) with a high-performance 396(402) that came with a big block
1985 IROC project I have been working on. The current motor has been
sold to one of my coworkers (future HCC member) for his 69 Chevelle SS
396 Project.
